Biography

Miles Swarthout, the only son of authors Glendon and Kathryn Swarthout, is an accomplished screenwriter with multiple produced films to his name. He has written and optioned both original works and adaptations of his late father's novels, including The Shootist—John Wayne's final film—for which Miles earned a Writers Guild nomination for Best Adaptation in 1976. In 2001, he edited a collection of his father's short stories titled Easterns and Westerns, published in hardcover by Michigan State University Press. This collection features an extensive Afterword by Miles about his father's literary career, along with a brief autobiography by Glendon.

As an author, Miles won the Spur Award for Best First Western Novel in 2004 with his novel The Sergeant's Lady. He also contributed a short story to the 2010 Western Writers anthology, Roundup!.

Miles was the original paid writer (uncredited) on The Homesman, directed by and starring Tommy Lee Jones, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2014. A trade paperback edition of Glendon Swarthout’s prizewinning novel The Homesman was released by Simon & Schuster in February 2014, featuring an Afterword by Miles discussing the creation of this Spur and Wrangler Award-winning Western from 1988.

Miles’ latest Western novel, The Last Shootist, a sequel to his father's renowned Spur-winning novel The Shootist, was published in hardcover by Forge Books (Macmillan) in September 2014. The original novel was adapted into John Wayne's final film, co-written by Miles. A TV miniseries combining both Shootist stories is currently being proposed.
