Biography
Eubie Blake, songwriter of hits like "I'm Just Wild About Harry," "You Were Meant For Me," and "Memories of You," was also a pianist and arranger. He received his education at New York University, studied the Schillinger System, and trained under Margaret Marshall and Llewellyn Wilson. Blake performed as a pianist and organist in cafés, vaudeville shows, and theaters.
In 1915, he formed a vaudeville duo with Noble Sissle. By 1917, he became assistant conductor to Jim Europe at the Clef Club and toured with a musical show featuring musicians from the US Army's 369th Infantry Regiment, organized by Europe. During World War II, Blake spent five years touring with the USO.
He joined ASCAP in 1922, collaborating primarily with Sissle and Andy Razaf. His other notable compositions include "Love Will Find a Way," "Shuffle Along," "Bandana Days," "Gypsy Blues," "Goodnight, Angeline," "Slave of Love," "Lowdown Blues," "You're Lucky to Me," "Lindy Hop," "Lovin' You the Way I Do," "Green Pastures," and "Handy Man.
