Biography

Handsome Noble Sissle stands as one of the lesser-known legends of ragtime, blues, and early jazz. His band delivered a unique blend of easy-listening, lively, and breezy sounds that set them apart from other groups of the era. Attending a Sissle performance meant more than just enjoying great music—you experienced engaging entertainment that lifted your spirits. As an energetic, charismatic, and humorous bandleader, Sissle’s vibrant personality greatly influenced his band’s success. He was also a talented dancer, singer, and songwriter.

Sissle collaborated with another musical genius, songwriter and bandleader Eubie Blake. Together, they penned classics like "I'm Just Wild About Harry" and contributed to iconic productions such as "Shuffle Along," "Chocolate Dandies," and "Harlem Cavalcade." These shows propelled the careers of performers like Florence Mills, Josephine Baker, Valaida Snow, and Blanche Calloway. The dance sequences impressed notable producers Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. and George White so much that they hired the artists to teach their white dancers. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Sissle and his band appeared in several films. Their music was not only vibrant and spirited, but their energetic stage presence also captivated audiences. However, with the decline of the Big Band era, Sissle’s role as a bandleader came to an end.

Beyond music, he played a key role in founding the Negro Actors Guild, serving as its president. He maintained a lifelong partnership with Eubie Blake. Their story is detailed in the book "Reminiscing with Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake," authored by Robert Kimball and William Bolcom.
