Biography

Renowned Serbian satirist Radoje Domanovic was born in the village of Ovsiste on February 16, 1873. He studied at a gymnasium in Kragujevac and later at the Grande École (university) in Belgrade, focusing on history and philology. Domanovic began his literary career with realist prose that idealized rural Serbian life. In 1895, he secured his first teaching position at a gymnasium in Pirot. This period coincided with the decline of the Obrenovic dynasty and the oppressive bourgeois bureaucracy and police rule. As a member and supporter of an opposition party, Domanovic began writing satirical stories that criticized the societal conditions of the time. Some of his most notable works from this era include "Stradija," "Leader," "Branding Iron," and "Reasoning of an Ordinary Serbian Ox." Following the 1903 coup d'état, Domanovic grew increasingly disillusioned, as he saw little change in society. This led to his growing isolation and a decline in his creative output. He died of tuberculosis at the age of 35 in Belgrade on August 17, 1908.

In the latter half of the 20th century, several of his works were adapted into films and television shows.
