Biography

Bobby Hutcherson is an American jazz musician known for playing the vibraphone and marimba. One of his most famous compositions is "Little B's Poem," featured on the 1966 Blue Note album Components.

Born in Los Angeles, California, Hutcherson was introduced to jazz by his brother Teddy, who played Art Blakey records at home. His older sister Peggy sang in Gerald Wilson's orchestra. Hutcherson later recorded several Pacific Jazz albums with Wilson and performed in his orchestra. Beginning his professional career in the late 1950s as a teenager, he worked with tenor saxophonist Curtis Amy and trumpeter Carmell Jones.

In 1964, Hutcherson received the "Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition" award in the Down Beat readers' poll.

Between 1963 and 1977, Hutcherson maintained one of the longest recording tenures with Blue Note Records, surpassed only by Horace Silver.

Hutcherson also pursued acting sporadically, appearing as the bandleader in the 1969 film They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, and playing Ace in the 1986 movie 'Round Midnight.
