Biography
Originally from the sunny shores of Takapuna in Aotearoa New Zealand, I have held a camera throughout my entire career. My passion for photography began while capturing skateboarding, a sport I was deeply involved in as a teenager. From there, I followed my camera into the realms of music and fashion, dedicating many years to refining my craft as a visual artist. I’ve photographed iconic performers such as U2, Nick Cave, David Bowie, and Siouxsie & the Banshees for the cover of Rip It Up magazine, a key publication in New Zealand’s music scene. As a fashion photographer, I created editorials and campaigns for leading designers and magazines across New Zealand and Australia. The experiences from these years continue to influence the images I create today.
Alongside photography, I explored directing and cinematography, producing visually distinctive music videos for acclaimed artists including Crowded House, The Beastie Boys, and numerous top New Zealand musicians. Among my notable directorial works are "Spellbound," the definitive documentary on NZ music icons Split Enz, and "The Scotsman and the Maori," which chronicles pioneering New Zealand photographer James McDonald. My film photography journey started with the internationally acclaimed film "Once Were Warriors," directed by Lee Tamahori. In 2000, I relocated to London to pursue a full-time career specializing in film and TV photography. Over the years, I’ve been privileged to collaborate with many of the world’s leading directors such as Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Peter Greenaway, Barry Levinson, and Anton Corbijn. I’ve had the honor of observing and capturing some of the world’s greatest actors up close.
My photographic approach centers on storytelling, striving to express the emotional core of a narrative through a single image. This demands not only technical skill but also strong communication and trust with the actors, directors, and producers I collaborate with.
I particularly enjoy the challenge of lighting and photographing actors in intimate, one-on-one settings. I have shot numerous marketing campaigns and gallery sessions for major companies including Apple TV, Paramount Studios, StudioCanal, Disney, Netflix, Sony Pictures, and Fox Entertainment.
In 2011, I became a BAFTA member, and in 2023, I was honored to join the prestigious Society of Motion Picture Still Photographers (SMPSP).
Currently, I am based in Budapest with my family, working between here and the UK, while always making time to return to New Zealand whenever possible.
