Biography

Roger Planchon (born 12 September 1931 in Saint-Chamond, Loire; died 12 May 2009 in Paris) was a French playwright, director, and filmmaker.

He spent his childhood in Ardèche, particularly in Dornas, drawing inspiration from his rural background, a theme frequently reflected in his work.

Planchon began his theater career in 1949 after winning an amateur theater competition. In 1952, he established the Théâtre de la Comédie on rue des Marronniers in Lyon. From 1957, he served as director of the Théâtre de la Cité in Villeurbanne, which became the Théâtre National Populaire in 1972.

He adapted numerous plays by Brecht, Molière, Shakespeare, as well as works by contemporary authors such as Arthur Adamov and Michel Vinaver. He also welcomed directors like Patrice Chéreau and Georges Lavaudant to the Théâtre National Populaire.

His filmography includes directing George Dandin ou le Mari confondu by Molière, Louis, enfant roi—which was featured at Cannes—and a film about Lautrec.

In 2002, Christian Schiaretti succeeded him as director of the TNP. Planchon then founded his own company, continuing to write and direct until his passing.

He died from a heart attack on 12 May 2009 and is buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery (22nd division).
