Biography

Walter Dean Myers was a renowned author of children's literature, particularly known for his contributions to young adult fiction. Born in Martinsburg, West Virginia, he grew up in Harlem, New York City. Facing a challenging childhood, Myers turned to writing as a means of self-expression, encouraged by his school teachers. Over his career, he authored more than one hundred books, including picture books and nonfiction works. He received the Coretta Scott King Award for African-American authors five times. His 1988 novel Fallen Angels is among the most frequently challenged books in the United States.

Myers served as the third U.S. National Ambassador for Young People's Literature from 2012 to 2013. He was also a member of the Board of Advisors for the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.
