Biography

Richard Steven Valenzuela (May 13, 1941 – February 3, 1959), professionally known as Ritchie Valens, was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. As a rock and roll pioneer and a key figure in the Chicano rock movement, Valens' career was tragically cut short when he died in a plane crash just eight months after beginning his recording career.

Valens achieved several hits, most famously "La Bamba," a Mexican folk song he adapted by infusing it with a rock rhythm and beat. Released in 1958, the song became a major hit and established him as a pioneer in Spanish-language rock and roll. He also reached number 2 on the American charts with the song "Donna."

On February 3, 1959, known as "The Day the Music Died," Valens perished in a plane crash in Iowa. The accident also claimed the lives of fellow musicians Buddy Holly and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, along with pilot Roger Peterson. In 2001, Valens was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
