Biography
Carolina is a screenwriter and director based in São Paulo, Brazil.
She has written and directed two feature films and six short films that have been selected for approximately 400 festivals, including Cannes, Locarno, Toronto, SXSW, and San Sebastián, earning over 100 awards.
Her most acclaimed short film, The Orphan (2018), premiered at The Director's Fortnight in Cannes and was also an official selection at the Toronto International Film Festival. It won the Queer Palm, becoming the first Brazilian film to receive this honor. Another significant work, Tatuapé Mahal Tower (2014), premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Carolina was named one of the "five filmmakers to watch" by curator Shane Smith. After its online release, it was featured among Vimeo Staff Picks' Best of the Year in 2017.
Carolina was among 10 emerging filmmakers invited to join the TIFF Talent Lab. She was also selected for Berlinale Talents and the Locarno Filmmakers Academy, where Indiewire recognized her as one of "Some of the World's Most Exciting New Filmmakers." In 2019, she participated in SEE Factory, co-writing and co-directing the short film Spit (2019), which screened on the opening day of the Director's Fortnight at Cannes.
She is the co-creator of the Netflix series Nobody is Looking, which won the International Emmy in 2020.
In 2021, Carolina was invited to join AMPAS, the Academy responsible for the Oscars.
Her debut feature film, Charcoal (2022), had its world premiere in the Platform Competition at the Toronto International Film Festival, followed by its European premiere at San Sebastián, and has won more than 10 awards worldwide.
Toll (2023), her second feature, also premiered at Toronto, where Carolina received the Emerging Talent Award at the TIFF Tribute Awards, alongside artists such as Pedro Almodóvar, Spike Lee, and Patricia Arquette. Toll has been selected for 80 festivals and won 25 awards to date, including Best Film at the Rome International Film Festival, judged by a jury led by Gael Garcia Bernal, as well as honors at Leeds Film Festival and Oostende Film Festival.
Since February 2025, a retrospective of Carolina's work has been available on Mubi Brazil, following an invitation from the platform to showcase her short and feature films.
