Biography

Oscar-winning W.P. Lipscomb, born William Percy Lipscomb in 1887 in Merton, England, was a British playwright and screenwriter who also produced and directed films. George Arliss, who starred in Cardinal Richelieu (1935), praised Lipscomb, a fellow British expatriate in Hollywood, for his ability to write excellent dialogue faster than any other writer he had worked with. Lipscomb's only directing credit was Colonel Blood (1934), for which he also wrote the screenplay.

In the mid-1930s, Twentieth Century-Fox studio chief Darryl F. Zanuck signed Lipscomb to a contract and brought him to Hollywood to adapt his play Clive of India (1935) as a starring vehicle for Ronald Colman. While in Hollywood, he adapted Victor Hugo's Les Misérables (1935), personally produced by Zanuck and starring Fredric March, as well as Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities (1935), produced by David O. Selznick and featuring Colman.

In 1938, Lipscomb adapted Clive of India (1938) once more as one of the earliest TV movies, broadcast by the BBC. That same year, he collaborated with Cecil Lewis and George Bernard Shaw on Pygmalion (1938), writing the scenario while Shaw provided the dialogue, adapting his own play. The trio won the Academy Award for Best Writing, Screenplay. This was Lipscomb's only Academy Award recognition until he received a BAFTA nomination for Best British Screenplay for A Town Like Alice (1956) in 1957, a year before his death.

W.P. Lipscomb worked as a screenwriter from 1928 until his passing. He died on July 25, 1958, in London.
