Biography
As of 2022, Patina Miller stars as Raquel Thomas, the leader of a street empire and mother of the main character in STARZ's crime drama Power Book III: Raising Kanan (2021), which has been renewed for a third season. She previously portrayed press coordinator Daisy Grant on CBS's Madam Secretary (2014), featuring Téa Leoni, Bebe Neuwirth, and Tim Daly. Created by Barbara Hall and directed by David Semel, the series aired from September 2014 to December 2019.
Miller debuted in film playing Commander Paylor in Lionsgate's The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 (2014), alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Julianne Moore, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. The first part of the trilogy’s finale was released in November 2014. She reprised her role in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 (2015), released in November 2015.
On Broadway, Miller starred as the Leading Player in the revival of Stephen Schwartz's 1972 musical Pippin. Directed by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus and co-starring Matthew James Thomas, Andrea Martin, and Terrence Mann, the production won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical at the 67th Annual Tony Awards. Miller infused a modern approach into the role originally played by Ben Vereen and mastered the show's signature Fosse choreography. For her performance, she received the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical, the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical, and nominations from the Drama League, Fred and Adele Astaire Awards, and Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards. She had previously performed the Leading Player role at the American Repertory Theater from December 2012 to January 2013.
Miller made her Broadway debut in 2011 as Deloris Van Cartier, a nightclub singer turned nun, in Sister Act. This role earned her a Tony nomination and nominations for the Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle Awards. She originated Deloris in the West End production at the London Palladium, garnering an Olivier Award nomination and winning the WhatsOnStage.com Theatregoers' Choice Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
Her off-Broadway credits include Ragtime at Avery Fisher Hall, City Center Encores!'s production of Kurt Weill and Maxwell Anderson's Lost in the Stars, and the Manhattan Theatre Club's Romantic Poetry. She also appeared in the Public Theater's pre-Broadway revival of Hair in 2008 at the Delacorte Theater, directed by Diane Paulus. Regional theatre work includes First You Dream, a Kander and Ebb revue at the Kennedy Center; Sister Act at the Alliance Theatre and Pasadena Playhouse; and Being Alive at the Philadelphia Theater Company. Miller participated in workshops for Book of Mormon, Nightingale, and American Idiot. Early in her career, she appeared on the daytime soap opera All My Children (1970).
Miller gave her first solo concert at the Kennedy Center during the 2013-2014 season and made her New York City concert debut in February 2014 as part of Lincoln Center Theater's American Songbook series, later broadcast on PBS.
She holds a degree in musical theater from Carnegie Mellon University and currently lives in New York City.
