Biography

Christine Norden, Britain's first notorious post-war film sex siren, was an alluring green-eyed blonde bombshell who had been singing and dancing since her teenage years. According to legend, she was "discovered" by agents of the renowned film mogul Sir Alexander Korda while waiting in line for theatre tickets.

Born Mary Lydia Thornton to a bus driver just three days after Christmas 1924, she was the first entertainer to perform on the Normandy beaches in 1944 for Allied troops after D-Day. Korda quickly signed her to a seven-year contract, casting her in stark, dark-toned films as a captivating, sometimes singing femme fatale. She appeared in numerous notable films including Mine Own Executioner (1947), An Ideal Husband (1947), Nightbeat (1947), and Saints and Sinners (1949).

A major pin-up figure over the years, she openly admitted to many affairs with both men and women. By the early 1950s, her film career had ended, and she turned to New York theatre, making her Broadway debut in the musical Tenderloin in 1960 and appearing in productions like Marat/Sade. She made theatrical history as the first actress to appear topless on Broadway in the 1967 play Scuba Duba.

Christine married five times and has a crater on Venus named after her in recognition of being a pioneer of the modern sex symbol. Her last husband developed and named a mathematical formula in her honor. She eventually returned to London for her final years, where she developed a respiratory infection and died of lobar pneumonia following bypass surgery at age 63. Her memoirs, discovered after her death, were initially considered too provocative to publish. Michael Thornton, a friend and royal biographer who inherited them, has since revealed parts of her private story.
