Biography

Shinichi Sekizawa (June 2, 1921 – November 11, 1992) was a Japanese screenwriter celebrated for his significant contributions to the original Godzilla series, having written screenplays and/or stories for 10 of the initial 15 Showa-era films. He started his career in Kyoto, joining a manga cartoonists' association that included anime pioneer Osamu Tezuka. His career was interrupted when he was drafted to serve in the South Pacific during World War II. Sekizawa revived his film career in 1946 by joining Beehive Productions as an assistant director, showcasing his screenwriting skills by completing the screenplay for Profile of the City in just four days. Later, at Shintoho Studios, he directed the now-lost film Fearful Attack of the Flying Saucers. Sekizawa began working at Toho in 1958 on Kihachi Okamoto's early films before becoming the studio’s primary monster screenwriter following the success of his Mothra screenplay. His kaiju scripts for Ishiro Honda are noted for their creativity, particularly in blending human drama with monster action and character development. His lighter tone contrasted with Takeshi Kimura's darker, more cynical writing style. Sekizawa’s talents extended beyond science fiction; during the 1960s, he wrote up to six screenplays a year across genres including salaryman comedies, war films, and television shows like the original Ultraman. Although he enjoyed writing monster movies, he eventually grew tired of the Godzilla series and shifted toward scripting animated features while also pursuing a career as a lyricist. A model train enthusiast, he published numerous works on the subject. Prior to his death, he was honored with a Purple Ribbon by the Japanese government in recognition of his significant artistic and cultural contributions.
