Biography
Thomas Adrian Sands is an American pop singer and actor who began his career in show business in 1949. He rose to fame quickly in January 1957 after appearing on Kraft Television Theater in an episode titled "The Singin' Idol." The song he performed, "Teen-Age Crush," became a major hit, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Cashbox chart.
Although Sands' early recordings had limited success, his breakthrough came with the Kraft Television Theatre episode "The Singing Idol." His performance of Joe Allison's "Teen-Age Crush" resonated with young audiences and, when released by Capitol Records, the single achieved gold record status. In 1960, his song "The Old Oaken Bucket" reached No. 25 on the UK Singles Chart. He also released his debut album, Steady Date with Tommy Sands. His rising popularity earned him a chance to perform at the Academy Awards and another Kraft Television Theatre role in "Flesh and Blood," where he played a gangster’s son. Additionally, he appeared in "The Promise" on Zane Grey Theatre, portraying the son of Gary Merrill's character.
Sands' teen idol appeal led to a film contract with 20th Century Fox, starring in the 1958 musical drama Sing, Boy, Sing, a feature adaptation of "The Singin' Idol." Despite Fox’s previous successes with teen stars like Elvis Presley and Pat Boone, the film did not perform well financially. Sands later supported Pat Boone in the Fox musical Mardi Gras, which saw moderate success. He released several albums, including Sands Storm, This Thing Called Love, When I'm Thinking of You, Sands at the Sands, and Dream with Me. Between May and November 1960, he served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves.
His second leading film role was in the teen comedy Love in a Goldfish Bowl alongside Fabian Forte, which failed to find success. However, he gained more popularity with the Disney fantasy musical Babes in Toyland, co-starring Annette Funicello. That same year, Sands and Funicello performed the Sherman Brothers’ title track for Disney’s The Parent Trap. Sands married Nancy Sinatra, whose father, Frank Sinatra, offered him a part in Come Blow Your Horn, which Sands declined. He later studied acting in New York.
Sands appeared with Fred Astaire in the Alcoa Theatre production "Blow High, Blow Clear." In 1963, he guest-starred in several episodes of Wagon Train, including "The Davey Baxter Story," "The Gus Morgan Story" (featuring Peter Falk), and "The Bob Stuart Story." His television appearances also included roles on Kraft Suspense Theatre, Combat!, Valentine's Day, Mr. Novak, Branded, and Hawaii Five-O.
