Biography

Daniel began his acting career in the early 1970s in weekly repertory theatre. Soon, he landed the lead role in ITV Playhouse's The Best of Enemies by Christopher Fry, acted alongside Nigel Hawthorne and Charles Gray in Pinero's The Schoolmistress for Yorkshire TV, and portrayed Alan Wilson opposite Tatum O'Neal in the film International Velvet (MGM, 1977). In 1978, he starred as Father Neil, a Catholic priest, opposite comic legend Arthur Lowe in the popular comedy series Bless Me Father (ITV, 1978–81).

Transitioning from priest to transvestite, in 1979 Richard O'Brien cast him as Dr. Frank'N'Furter in the original UK national tour of The Rocky Horror Show. He continued in this role in the 1980 West End production at the Comedy Theatre and was then invited to Australia, where he performed the role over two thousand times during various Australasian tours throughout the 1980s, which he also directed. He holds the record as the world’s longest-running Frank'N'Furter.

His other notable Australian roles include The Dentist in Little Shop of Horrors, Gary LeJeune in Noises Off directed by Michael Blakemore, and Arnold Beckoff in Torch Song Trilogy. He also played the supervillain Jake Sanders in the 1980s Australian high-gloss global hit TV series Return to Eden.

While directing a Rocky Horror tour in New Zealand in 1986, he gave a young Russell Crowe his first professional acting role as Eddie in the show. He later cast Crowe as Johnny in the original Melbourne production of Bad Boy Johnny & The Prophets of Doom.

Daniel has produced and directed several music TV documentaries, including One Hit Wonders for the BBC and Walk On The Wildside for ITV, a personal exploration of gender roles in rock and pop featuring interviews with Mick Rock, Malcolm McLaren, Lindsay Kemp, Pete Burns, Marc Almond, Dave Stewart, and Ray Davies.
