Biography
Wayne White is a multifaceted American artist known for his roles as an art director, illustrator, and puppeteer. Raised in Chattanooga, he draws on his Southern upbringing to create inspired works across film, television, and fine art. After graduating from Middle Tennessee State University, Wayne moved to New York City, where he illustrated for publications such as the East Village Eye, New York Times, Raw Magazine, and the Village Voice. In 1986, he became a designer for the popular TV show Pee-wee's Playhouse, earning three Emmy Awards for his contributions. Later, relocating to Los Angeles with his wife, Mimi Pond, Wayne continued his television work, designing sets and characters for shows including Shining Time Station, Beakman's World, Riders In The Sky, and Bill & Willis. His work in music videos earned him Billboard and MTV Music Video Awards for art direction on iconic videos like The Smashing Pumpkins' "Tonight, Tonight" and Peter Gabriel's "Big Time." Recently, Wayne has found significant success as a fine artist, creating paintings and public installations exhibited worldwide. His signature pieces feature large, three-dimensional text intricately integrated into vintage landscape images, delivering messages that are both thought-provoking and humorous, often reflecting on vanity, ego, and his Southern memories. Among his acclaimed public works is a notable exhibition at Rice University, where he constructed the world's largest George Jones puppet head titled "Big Lectric Fan To Keep Me Cool While I Sleep." In 2009, Wayne's life and career were documented in a comprehensive 382-page monograph edited by Todd Oldham, showcasing hundreds of images from his earliest illustrations to his latest fine art sculptures. Since the book's release, Wayne has toured the country, delivering engaging hour-long talks about his life and work, often accompanied by banjo and harmonica performances.
