Biography
Brijmohan Vyas, popularly known as B M Vyas, was born on October 22, 1920, in Rajasthan's Churu district. He stayed in Rajasthan until completing his undergraduate studies in Sanskrit before relocating to Mumbai at his brother's suggestion.
With a longstanding passion for music, Vyas began formal training upon arriving in Mumbai. In the 1940s, he joined Prithviraj Kapoor's Prithvi Theatre troupe as a singer for their inaugural production, Shakuntala. His Sanskrit expertise soon made him valuable beyond singing, extending to acting. When the original actor for Dushyant, K N Singh, withdrew due to difficulties with Sanskrit lines, Vyas stepped in, marking his acting debut in Shakuntala. He spent nearly a decade with Prithvi Theatre, touring nationally and earning acclaim as both actor and musician. Alongside theatre, he contributed to films, debuting as a playback singer in Bharthari (1944) and later recording songs for Pehle Aap (1944) and Maharana Pratap (1946). Despite his initial ambition to be a singer, his focus shifted firmly toward acting.
While with Prithvi Theatre, Vyas also joined Chetan Anand's India Pictures as a production manager. He made a brief on-screen appearance in their first film, Neecha Nagar (1946). Subsequently, he acted in Aag (1948) and Barsaat (1949), which helped establish his reputation as a film actor.
Over a nearly fifty-year career, Vyas appeared in close to two hundred films, including Baiju Bawra, Do Aankhen Barah Haath, and Sarawasti Chandra. He is especially remembered for his portrayal of Ravan in Babubhai Mistri's Sampoorna Ramayan (1961). Following this acclaimed role, he was cast in numerous mythological and fantasy films, many under producer-director Homi Wadia.
Vyas retired from acting in the early 1990s, with some of his final films being Maa (1993) and Oh Darling Yeh Hai India (1995). He passed away on March 11, 2013, aged 93.
