Biography

A prominent Spanish actress of the 1940s and 50s known for comedies, musicals, and period dramas, she was the daughter of actor Ricardo Canales. Her family fled to Venezuela at the start of the Spanish Civil War before settling in Buenos Aires, where Susana made her film debut at age nine. She returned to Spain in 1950, made her stage debut in 1951, and married the prolific Spanish actor Julio Peña in 1953, with whom she occasionally shared on-screen romantic roles. Her most notable films include Cielo Negro (1951) opposite Fernando Rey, the swashbuckling epic The Adventures of Gil Blas (1956), and La ragazza di Piazza San Pietro (1958) alongside Vittorio De Sica. She also portrayed Marie Antoinette (credited as 'Susan Canales') in Samuel Bronston's international production John Paul Jones (1959), which featured Bette Davis briefly as Catherine the Great. From 1967 until her retirement in 1995, Susana focused on theatre, television, and radio work.
