Biography
Jimmie Dodd, a composer, songwriter ("Mickey Mouse March"), actor, singer, guitarist, and conductor, was educated at the University of Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Conservatory, and Vanderbilt University. He began his career in 1933 as a guitarist and singer on the radio, moving to Hollywood in 1937 to perform with the Louis Prima orchestra before transitioning to acting. During World War II, he toured the Aleutians and the China-Burma-India region with the USO alongside his wife, Ruth Carrell Dodd. Starting in 1952, he became active in television and secured the MC role on the new The Mickey Mouse Club series in 1955. He departed from the show in 1959 and embarked on an Australian tour that extended into 1960. Additionally, he led his own dance troupe. Dodd joined ASCAP in 1946, collaborating primarily with his wife Ruth, George Wyle, and John Jacob Loeb. Among his other well-known songs are "He Was There," "Encyclopedia," "I Love Girls," "Lonely Guitar," "Mamie," "Nashville Blues," "I'm No Fool," "Rosemary," "Be a Good Guest," "Amarillo," "Hi to You," "Proverbs," "Washington" (the official song of the District of Columbia), "Meet Me in Monterey" (written for the Monterey Centennial), and "A Bird Is Singin' the Blues.
