Biography
Simon Lythgoe is a British-born showrunner, executive producer, and President of Legacy Productions whose work has helped shape some of the world’s most successful entertainment franchises, including American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, and Meet Me Next Christmas. Lythgoe has earned three Emmy nominations, a Producers Guild of America nomination, a People’s Choice Award, and multiple Telly Awards for his work in entertainment television and film.
Born in North London and raised between theatre and television, Lythgoe began his career working backstage in pantomime productions before transitioning into television production in the United Kingdom and later Australia. Early credits included The Late Show with David Letterman, the Royal Variety Performance, Home and Away, Gladiators, and coverage of the 2000 Summer Olympics.
In Australia, Lythgoe became part of the original producing team behind Popstars, the groundbreaking music competition format that would later evolve into Pop Idol and eventually American Idol. In 2001, he relocated to the United States to help launch the American version of the series, producing the first six seasons and helping introduce artists including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Fantasia Barrino, and Ruben Studdard to television audiences.
Lythgoe later produced three seasons of So You Think You Can Dance before expanding into network and cable entertainment programming through projects with Fremantle, Disney, Freeform, Disney+, NBC, Fox Broadcasting Company, and CMT. His producing and consulting credits include America's Got Talent, Celebrity Family Feud, Let's Make a Deal, On the Lot, Opening Act, and A Chance to Dance.
Through Legacy Productions, Lythgoe has continued developing global entertainment formats, documentaries, live events, and scripted films. His Disney productions, including Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings and Decorating Disney, featured talent such as Pentatonix, Olivia Newton-John, Jason Derulo, Whoopi Goldberg, Sofia Carson, Jordan Fisher, and Cierra Ramirez, earning multiple Telly Awards for entertainment programming.
Most recently, Lythgoe executive produced the Netflix feature film Meet Me Next Christmas starring Pentatonix and Christina Milian. The film became the No. 1 movie on Netflix in more than 80 countries worldwide during its release.
In addition to his producing career, Lythgoe is an international keynote speaker and lecturer specializing in non-scripted format development, entertainment branding, and the future of media. He has spoken at universities and conferences throughout the United States, Australia, Asia, and Europe, including appearances with Hunan TV, CJ ENM, and the Banff World Media Festival.
