Biography

John Barry was a British production designer who began his career in the art department of the 1963 film Cleopatra. He is best known for his creative design work on Star Wars and Superman: The Movie. Barry had the chance to direct the sci-fi film Saturn 3 but was replaced during production. Nevertheless, he returned to the Star Wars franchise as a second unit director for The Empire Strikes Back. On May 31, 1979, two weeks into filming, he collapsed on set and was hospitalized with a fever of 104 degrees. He passed away at 2 a.m. on June 1 due to meningitis.
