Biography
David Geoffrey Clatworthy (11 July 1960 – 8 September 2020) was a South African actor and director.
Born in South Africa on 11 July 1960, Clatworthy attended Pretoria Boys High School. Between 1978 and 1979, he served as a regimental instructor at the School of Artillery. In 1980, he enrolled at the University of Cape Town to pursue a bilingual Performer's Diploma in Speech and Drama, graduating in 1983.
He was married to actress Wilmien Rossouw, with whom he had two children. Later, he was in a relationship with Michelle Botha, and they had one son together.
Clatworthy was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and passed away on 8 September 2020 at the age of 60.
He delivered notable performances in numerous theatre productions, including The King and I, Life Is a Pitch, Macbeth, Revamp, The Boys Next Door, and Beyond Therapy. His portrayal of "Jamie" in Long Day’s Journey Into Night earned him the Fleur Du Cap Award for Best Supporting Actor. Additionally, he received nominations for both the Fleur Du Cap Award and the Dalro Award in 1989. His film debut came in 1990 with Return to Justice, in which he played the role of "Hayes."
In 2008, Clatworthy appeared as "Arno" in the SABC2 sitcom On the Couch. He portrayed "Commander Schoeman" in the 2012 Mzansi Magic crime drama Mshika-shika. In 2013, he guest-starred in the SABC3 sitcom Safe. From 2016, he joined the kykNET Afrikaans soap opera Getroud met Rugby as "Gerald Richter" and also served as a director for the show. In 2018, he played "Clive Wright" in the SABC2 sitcom Konsternasie Oppie Stasie. His other screen credits include the international science fiction film District 9 and the first season of the Netflix series The Crown.
Beyond film, theatre, and television, Clatworthy lent his voice to over 100 radio dramas. His other significant film roles include appearances in Mia et le lion blanc, Harry Game, Young Ones, The Making of the Mahatma, Everyman's Taxi, Lunar Cop, Verraaiers, Platteland, and Winnie Mandela.
