Geraldine Sue Page (November 22, 1924 – June 13, 1987) was a renowned American actress celebrated for her performances on Broadway, in prominent Hollywood films, and in television. Throughout her career, she received numerous accolades, including one Academy Award from eight nominations, two Primetime Emmy Awards, two Golden Globes, a BAFTA Award, and four Tony Award nominations.
Born in Kirksville, Missouri, Page pursued her studies at the Art Institute of Chicago and trained with Uta Hagen and Lee Strasberg in New York City. Her first credited film role was in the Western Hondo (1953), which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Due to her connection with Hagen, she was blacklisted in Hollywood and did not appear in films for eight years. Nevertheless, she remained active in television and theater, earning her first Tony Award nomination for Sweet Bird of Youth (1959–60), a role she reprised in the 1962 film adaptation, winning a Golden Globe.
Page received further Academy Award nominations for You're a Big Boy Now (1966) and Pete 'n' Tillie (1972), along with a Tony nomination for Absurd Person Singular (1974–75). Her film work during this period included roles in the thrillers What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice? (1969) alongside Ruth Gordon, and The Beguiled (1971) with Clint Eastwood. In 1977, she voiced Madam Medusa in Walt Disney's The Rescuers and appeared in Woody Allen's Interiors (1978), which won her a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1979, Page returned to Broadway starring in Agnes of God (1982), securing her third Tony nomination. She earned Academy Award nominations for The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984) and The Trip to Bountiful (1985), winning the Oscar for Best Actress for the latter. Page passed away in New York City in 1987 during a Broadway run of Blithe Spirit, a performance that garnered her fourth Tony Award nomination.
