Biography
Screenwriter and film director, he began his career assisting Chilean director Patricio Guzmán. In 1972, he wrote and directed the feature documentary "Los Puños Frente al Cañón." After going into exile in Mexico in 1974, he settled in West Berlin, where he lived until 1995. During this period, he taught, wrote screenplays, specialized in film dramaturgy, and produced documentaries for German television. In 1986, he was selected for the inaugural Berlin screenplay workshop with the comedy "The Children of Mickey Mouse." In 1994, his original script "La Mirada desde el Circo" was chosen for the SOURCES Screenwriting Workshop under the MEDIA Program of the European Community. The German adaptation of his comedy "Los Hijos del Ratón Mickey" premiered in Germany in 1996 as "Irren ist Männlich."
Returning to Chile in 1995, he later created the documentary "Chile, la herida Abierta," focusing on Pinochet in London, for the French-German channel ARTE. In 2001, he wrote and directed the feature film "Taxi para Tres" ("A Cab for Three"), which garnered significant public and critical acclaim for Chilean cinema, winning 30 awards domestically and internationally, including the Golden Shell for Best Film at the 2001 San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain. In 2011, he filmed the original feature "Cirqo," which entered post-production in 2012.
He has served as a jury member at the Guadalajara International Film Festival in Mexico, the Gramado International Film Festival in Brazil, and the Latin American Film Festival in Havana.
His teaching experience includes positions at the Film School of the University of Mexico (CUEC), the Free University of Berlin, the Film School of San Antonio de los Baños (EICTV) in Cuba, the Film School of Chile, and the University of Santiago de Chile. Since 2006, he has been a professor at the Film and Television School of the University of Chile, serving as its director from 2008 to 2010. Currently at ICEI, he teaches "Script I," "Film Appreciation," "Idea Workshop and Script Development," and is part of the postgraduate faculty for the Diploma in Film Screenwriting.
