Biography
After graduating from the School of Film and Television at USC, John launched his career as a cinematographer, contributing to various television and film projects. In 1993, a friend introduced him to computer animation, which became a thrilling new avenue for applying his cinematography expertise. His talent for bringing traditional filmmaking techniques into the digital realm caught the attention of Amblin Entertainment that same year, where he joined the visual effects team for the TV series seaQuest DSV. John quickly rose to Vice President and General Manager of the newly established Amblin Imaging, overseeing effects for both seaQuest and Star Trek: Voyager. His work on Voyager's pilot episode earned him a 1995 Emmy Award for computer animation. After seaQuest and Amblin Imaging concluded in 1996, John founded Digital Muse, producing effects for shows like The X-Files, Sliders, Titanic: The Mini-Series, and continued contributions to Voyager and Deep Space Nine. Digital Muse also expanded into film and commercial projects, becoming a leading visual effects boutique in Hollywood. In 2000, John departed Digital Muse to establish a visual effects division at Hollywood Digital West, where the team created effects for the Sci-Fi Channel's acclaimed series Invisible Man. By 2002, he advanced to Vice President of Visual Effects at Liberty Livewire Pictures, collaborating closely with Riot Effects in Santa Monica and Encore Effects in Hollywood. Leveraging his expertise in production, post-production, and visual effects, John transitioned back into producing feature films and television in 2003, working with CafeFX, Vinton Studios (now Laika), and others. Additionally, he has served as General Manager for global VFX powerhouse Pixomondo, Managing Director of supercomputer firm Silverdraft, and Executive Producer for Shade VFX in New York.
