Biography

Runze began his career as an actor at 23. By 26, he became the manager of the avant-garde "Theater in the British Center." Later, he worked as a writer and director, dubbing foreign films into German. His initial directing roles were at various theaters in Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich. Simultaneously, he started making his own films, and in 1972, he took over Aurora Television in Hamburg. His first major directorial success was Der Lord von Barmbeck (1974), which earned him his first Bundesfilmpreis (German Federal Film Award). The next two films completed a trilogy, earning him further accolades. Like much of his work, these films centered on themes of crime, guilt, and redemption. Through his movies, he challenges the justice of governmental judgments and highlights flaws in imprisonment and society’s perception of criminals.
