Biography
Kyle Newman is an award-winning filmmaker and New York Times bestselling, Hugo Award-nominated author.
His directing credits include several feature films such as Fanboys (2009), a Star Wars-inspired comedy starring Kristen Bell and Seth Rogen; the action-comedy Barely Lethal featuring Oscar nominees Hailee Steinfeld and Samuel L. Jackson for A24 Films; and his latest film, 1UP (2022), starring Ruby Rose, produced by Lionsgate and Buzzfeed Studios, set in the world of eSports.
He has directed videos for top music artists including Taylor Swift ("Style," "Clean," and 1989 World Tour footage with Selena Gomez, Haim, and others), Lana Del Rey ("Summertime Sadness"), and Cyn ("House with a View") featuring Katy Perry, with his work garnering billions of views.
Newman produced the acclaimed documentary Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made (2015), which follows three teenagers recreating Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) scene by scene (distributed by Drafthouse Films/Neon), and executive produced the 2021 thriller Happily. He also developed the story for the Netflix Original animated feature Gnome Alone (2017), produced by Shrek's John H. Williams.
As a New York Times bestselling author, Newman is recognized for Dungeons & Dragons: Art & Arcana, a Hugo and Locus Award-nominated history of the iconic role-playing game, and Heroes' Feast: The Official Dungeons & Dragons Cookbook, which appeared on major bestseller lists including The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly. He is currently working on his third and fourth books for Penguin Random House.
A Tisch School of the Arts honors graduate from NYU and recipient of the prestigious Martin Scorsese Award for Excellence in Directing, Newman has written and/or directed projects for clients such as Microsoft, Interscope Records, Starz Entertainment, Wizards of the Coast (Hasbro), Coca-Cola, Star Wars, 20th Century Fox, Entertainment Weekly, Buzzfeed, Big Machine Records, Lionsgate, Endemol Shine, Millennium Films, Pacific Life Insurance, Lucasfilm, Games for Windows, A24 Films, Awesomeness TV, Hooters of America, Titan Publishing, Unsub Records, The Saturday Group, and Universal Republic Music.
