Biography

Cindera Che is an Asian American actor and dancer, widely recognized for her iconic role as the Madame in Michael Jackson: Smooth Criminal (1988). With a career spanning more than three decades, she has recently appeared on ABC's Fresh Off the Boat (2015), NBC's Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (2020), ABC's Lethal Weapon (2016), and collaborated with Alan Yang, creator of Master of None (2015), on his directorial debut Netflix film, Tigertail (2020).

Cindera began her career as a dancer at the age of twelve on a weekly variety show in her hometown of Taipei, Taiwan. In 1977, her family relocated to the United States after her father purchased a House of Pies restaurant in Orange County. Her first professional U.S. role was on ABC's Fantasy Island (1977). Notable dance performances include partnering with Donald O'Connor in Out to Sea (1997), pop-locking in Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo (1984), dancing on the freeway in La La Land (2016), and salsa dancing in Showtime's Penny Dreadful: City of Angels (2020).

Beyond performing, Cindera has been a dedicated dance teacher and performance coach for over 35 years. She was on staff at The Edge Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles and taught at various conventions and workshops across the U.S. and internationally. She developed the Movement For Actors training program at The Edge. Her talent for transforming non-dancers into expressive performers earned her a role as coach for Kristi Yamaguchi on Dancing with the Stars (2005), contributing to Yamaguchi’s winning routine. Among her choreography projects, her favorite was creating the finale for 750 inmates—part of the renowned dancing inmates of Cebu, Philippines—for the film Dance of the Steel Bars (2013). This project deeply embodied her belief that dance transcends all human barriers, a principle she brings to all her work.
