Biography

Born in New York City in 1903, American novelist and screenwriter Niven Busch began his writing career in the early 1920s with "Time" magazine. Rising to the position of editor there, he simultaneously worked for "The New Yorker." Leveraging his Hollywood connections—his agent was Myron Selznick, son of producer Lewis Selznick and brother of producer David O. Selznick—he sought to enter the film industry. His agent secured him a job at Warner Bros. Pictures, where his first film was The Crowd Roars (1932), directed by Howard Hawks and starring James Cagney, marking a strong debut despite his name being misspelled in the credits.

Throughout the 1930s, Busch's screenwriting talent earned him steady work at major studios. Although he contributed to several "B" pictures, he received an Oscar nomination in 1938 for 20th Century-Fox's In Old Chicago (1937), based on his story "We, the O'Leary's." He collaborated with producer Samuel Goldwyn on The Westerner (1940) and later became Goldwyn's story editor, recommending the production of Pride of the Yankees (1942), starring Gary Cooper and Busch's future wife, Theresa Wright.

With a secure screenwriting career, Busch turned to novel writing. His novel "Duel in the Sun" (1944) became a bestseller and was adapted into the well-known film Duel in the Sun (1946). Another novel, "The Furies," was made into a successful western starring Barbara Stanwyck in 1950. He penned the screenplay for the film noir classic The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946) and wrote Pursued (1947) with Robert Mitchum, considered one of the earliest noir westerns.

Busch and Wright divorced in 1952 after ten years of marriage; he married five times in total. Leaving the film industry, he moved to northern California, purchased a cattle ranch, and focused on writing novels. He married twice more and became a Regent Professor at the University of California. In 1988, he appeared briefly as "The Old Man" in The Unbearable Lightness of Being, filmed near San Francisco. His final novel, "The Titan Game," was published in 1989.

He passed away from congestive heart failure in San Francisco in 1991 at the age of 88.
