Biography

Henry Fielding was born on April 22, 1707, to Edmund Fielding, a nobleman fallen on hard times who frequently found himself in debtor's prisons. Following the death of their mother, Henry and his seven siblings were raised by their maternal grandmother. Known for his rebellious nature, Henry spent a short time at a Dutch college before relocating to London to pursue playwriting. Despite his plays' success, he inherited his father's poor financial habits and was constantly in debt. In 1734, after four years of courtship, he married Charlotte Craddock, whom he loved deeply. They shared ten happy years together until Charlotte died of a fever in 1744. Henry grieved profoundly; Charlotte inspired the character Sophia Western in his novel "Tom Jones." In 1747, he wed Mary Daniel, his late wife's former maid, who was six months pregnant at the time. Although Henry was known as a brawler, drunkard, and womanizer, he remained a prolific and vigorous writer.

When his health declined in 1754, he traveled to Lisbon, Portugal, hoping the warmer climate would aid his recovery. Unfortunately, he contracted jaundice and died two months after arriving, on October 8, 1754.
