Biography

Greg has been creating and directing award-winning films for over 40 years. Beginning his filmmaking journey at just 13, he teamed up with Jim Freeman in 1966 to establish MacGillivray Freeman Films. He enjoys the intricate strategy involved in filmmaking, where every decision influences multiple aspects. To date, he has produced more than 50 films, including upwards of 35 IMAX projects.

Since producing his first IMAX Theatre film, To Fly!, in 1976, Greg has crafted some of the most lasting works in the giant-screen genre. He has shot more 70mm film than anyone in cinematic history and is the first documentary filmmaker to surpass $1 billion in global ticket sales. Greg earned two Academy Award nominations for Best Documentary Short Subject: in 1995 for The Living Sea and in 2000 for Dolphins. In 2002, the Giant Screen Theater Association recognized him as one of the five key figures behind the industry's success. That same year, he received the Bradford Washburn Award, the highest accolade from Boston’s Museum of Science, honoring his contributions to science education.

A highlight of his career has been the opportunity to share filming adventures with his family and crew. He has traveled extensively, with standout experiences including Tibet in 1980, which he describes as "rough and raw," reminiscent of the Old West; Irian Jaya (New Guinea) in 1984, where he encountered Stone Age cultures; and Costa Rica, famous for its incredible surfing—though not without incident, as Shaun was once bitten by a shark.

An avid ocean conservationist, Greg and his wife Barbara founded the One World One Ocean Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to educating and inspiring audiences through giant-screen films and related programs about the urgent need to protect the world’s oceans. Greg also sits on the Board of Directors for The Great Park in Orange County, Sylvia Earle's Mission Blue, the Laguna Playhouse, and the Laguna Art Museum.
