Biography
Bob Sarles is a producer, director, and Primetime Emmy-nominated film and television editor. He edited the Peabody Award-winning TBS documentary series Moon Shot, MTV's groundbreaking reality series The Real World, as well as numerous unscripted and documentary television series and specials broadcast on Showtime, HBO, NBC, ABC, Bravo, VH1, Discovery, FX, A&E, WE, Oxygen, and TVOne.
Sarles co-directed and edited the feature documentary BANG! The Bert Berns Story, which premiered at SXSW, enjoyed theatrical screenings, and was distributed by Apple. He also directed and edited the Sony Legacy-produced documentary Sweet Blues: A Film About Mike Bloomfield, along with films showcased at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, the EMP Museum in Seattle, and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music in Memphis.
He served as producer and editor on VH1's Behind The Music series, A&E's Biography, and was an editor for the TVOne music documentary series Unsung. Sarles has directed and edited DVDs for Jefferson Airplane, John Lee Hooker, and Phil Lesh & Friends and produced and edited the triple platinum-selling nine-DVD Time Life boxed set Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Live! For many years, he produced the annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony aired on MTV, VH1, and HBO, creating dozens of artist tribute films for the event and broadcast.
Sarles has edited award-winning music videos for leading rock, rap, and country artists, including ZZ Top’s “Legs” and Green Day’s “Longview.” He has also edited national television commercials for Nike, Reebok, and Miller Beer, collaborating with directors such as James Cameron and Barry Sonnenfeld. For a year, he led the Commercial Editorial Department at Industrial Light & Magic as Senior Editor.
His editing credits include the historical feature documentary Mata Hari: The Naked Spy and the cult horror film The Video Dead. He co-produced and edited the documentary Wrestling With Satan and worked as producer and cinematographer on the documentary Son Of A Bitch.
As an assistant and apprentice editor, Sarles contributed to feature films including Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Henry & June, and The Right Stuff.
Recently, Sarles directed and edited the feature documentary Born In Chicago, produced and edited a television documentary about Ozzy Osbourne for A&E, and directed and edited the documentary short Yo Cip!. As of 2019, he is editing a true crime documentary executive produced by Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana and is directing a documentary on the life and times of the late American satirist Paul Krassner.
