Biography

A New York-born writer and director known for his comedic style. He graduated from Fordham University and began working at Kalem in 1916 on the 'Ham and Bud' series (featuring Lloyd Hamilton and Bud Duncan). After Kalem was acquired by Vitagraph, Taylor became a feature continuity writer. Following 1920, he joined Hal Roach as a full-time screenwriter, eventually becoming a key member of Harold Lloyd's writing team. He frequently collaborated with Fred C. Newmeyer as co-director on comedy classics like Safety Last! (1923) and The Freshman (1925). His notable solo directing works include Harold Lloyd’s For Heaven's Sake (1926), Exit Smiling (1926) starring Beatrice Lillie; Tempest (1928) with John Barrymore; and Ambassador Bill (1931) featuring Will Rogers.

In 1937, Taylor co-founded Chase Productions with his writer brother Matt and wrote the Broadway play Stopover, which had a 23-performance run at the Lyceum Theatre. He directed Laurel & Hardy in one of their final films, Nothing But Trouble (1944), before focusing on writing. His most acclaimed novel was the thriller The Man With My Face, about an accountant whose life is stolen by a doppelganger, leading to his persecution as an impostor. This story was adapted into a 1951 film starring Barry Nelson, for which Taylor also penned the screenplay.
