Biography

Albert Johnson, known as “Prodigy,” was part of the rap duo Mobb Deep. Coming from a family of musicians, he studied art and design in Manhattan, where he met Kejuan Muchita. Together, they began performing as the Poetical Prophets before gaining fame as Mobb Deep. His partner took the stage name “Havoc.” Their album The Infamous earned a gold certification, followed by successful releases Hell on Earth and Murda Muzik. Their music, reflecting the grim realities of New York’s urban life, became a staple of hardcore gangsta rap. Prodigy’s debut solo album, H.N.I.C., also achieved popularity. Throughout his career, he faced multiple legal issues and served three and a half years in prison for illegal gun possession. Mobb Deep briefly disbanded during his incarceration but reunited upon his release. Born with sickle-cell anemia, Prodigy endured severe pain, which he conveyed in his song “You Can Never Feel My Pain.” He was married briefly to Ikesha Dudley. Prodigy was hospitalized during a Las Vegas performance due to sickle-cell complications and passed away at 42. Despite his brief career, he left a lasting legacy in rap music.
