Biography

The son of a manufacturer trained as an editor and became an assistant director at SDR in Stuttgart in 1954. He later worked there as a television director and, at the end of the 1950s, followed Helmut Jedele to Bavaria Film near Munich. From 1959 to 1963, he served as chief director before transitioning to freelance work. With his innovative productions, he quickly became Germany's most renowned television director. In 1967, he directed the award-winning music television special A Man and His Music plus Ella plus Jobim for Frank Sinatra in the United States, featuring Ella Fitzgerald and Antônio Carlos Jobim. At the end of the 1960s, he lived in Munich with Sinatra's daughter, Tina Sinatra. Among other projects, he directed the ZDF show series Wünsch Dir was and the comedy television series Klimbim from 1973 to 1979. He was in a relationship with Ingrid Steeger, an actress in Klimbim, for five years starting in 1974. In 1990, he co-founded the Lobby für Kinder association with Ursula Pfeiffer in Nuremberg, which supports children in need. Michael Pfleghar was married to pop singers Bibi Johns (1960-1962) and Inge Brück (divorced in the late 1960s); he also had a relationship with Heidi Brühl. From 1981 to 1990, he was the second husband of Wencke Myhre and father to their son Michael (born 1982). He had a daughter from a relationship with Corinne Pulver. In 1991, he died by suicide in the Düsseldorf apartment of his friend Hubert Maessen, a publicist. Pfleghar was laid to rest in the family grave at the forest cemetery in Stuttgart-Degerloch.
