Biography

Zara Frances Cully was an American actress known for her role as Olivia 'Mother Jefferson' Jefferson on the CBS sitcom The Jeffersons. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1892, Cully was the eldest of ten children born to musical parents. She graduated from the Worcester School of Speech and Music and became known as "one of the world's greatest elocutionists". Cully moved to Jacksonville, Florida and became a drama teacher while producing, writing, directing, and acting in numerous plays. After experiencing racism in the Jim Crow-era South, Cully moved to Hollywood where she became a regular performer at the Ebony Showcase Theatre. Cully had a long list of acting credentials spanning 50 years before landing her role on The Jeffersons. She was married to James M. Brown, Jr. and had four children. Cully died at the age of 86 from lung cancer and was interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. She was posthumously awarded an NAACP special Image Award.
