Biography

Canadian-born Burt Metcalfe, a former actor, was working as a casting director for Universal Television when Gene Reynolds recruited him to cast the pilot episode of M*A*S*H (1972). He was also given the title of associate producer to enhance the offer. Metcalfe embraced the challenge, playing a crucial role in assembling the talented cast and shaping the series' overall tone. Alongside Larry Gelbart and Reynolds, he conducted extensive background research on medical and military topics through phone interviews with hundreds of doctors, some of whom had Korean War experience, providing valuable insights. Their goal was to deliver a social message framed within a black comedy: "Over the years, we've capitalized on the blend of comedy and drama to great effect, weaving grim, somber elements into humorous content simultaneously." After Reynolds left for Lou Grant (1977), Metcalfe advanced to executive producer, staying with M*A*S*H for its entire run and directing thirty-one episodes. He earned thirteen shared Primetime Emmy Award nominations. Later, he served as executive producer and director of the sequel AfterMASH (1983) and joined the now-defunct MTM Enterprises in the same roles in 1986.

Metcalfe relocated from Montreal to Los Angeles in 1949 and earned a theatre studies degree from UCLA that same year. He debuted on screen in Mark Robson's The Bridges at Toko-Ri (1954). After serving in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1957, he appeared in minor TV roles, including a frightened resident in The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street (1960). He had recurring roles as a newlywed (son-in-law to Leon Ames and Ruth Warrick) in Father of the Bride (1961) and as an Air Force Colonel in 12 O'Clock High (1964). In 1965, Metcalfe joined Screen Gems as a casting director and later as an executive assistant. From 1979 until his death in July 2022, he was married to actress Jan Jorden, who portrayed Nurse Baker in nine episodes of M*A*S*H.
