Biography
Zack Abramowitz, born Zachary Scott Abramowitz in Brooklyn, New York in 1983, began his acting journey as a teenager at James Madison High School, participating in school productions. He pursued Theater studies at CUNY Hunter in Manhattan, training under Bill Walters, Mira Felner, and Barbara Bosch, and performed in plays like The Pillowman. While at Hunter, he also excelled in improvisation at Chicago City Limits and the Upright Citizens Brigade. A pivotal moment came in 2003 when he joined the Caymichael Patten Studio, where under the guidance of Caymichael Patten, Elyse Knight, and Heather Loschiavo, he refined his craft and gained comprehensive experience in both the artistic and business aspects of acting.
From this foundation, Zack expanded into independent theater and film projects. His work spans various genres, including abstract theater (4.48 Psychosis), improv comedy (The Art of the Pick-up), surrealism (Harold Maxx), and science fiction (Amazing Fantasy). In 2005, he toured China with a CUNY theater group, performing A Dream Play at the Beijing Academy of Drama to great acclaim. After graduating that year, he continued his work in both mediums, starring in projects like Guardians, a powerful statement against torture where he performed one of two lead monologues, and the comedic film How to Lose in the Game of Life. He has performed at notable New York theaters such as Primary Stages, Manhattan Theatre Source, Dramatist's Guild, the Flea, the Magnet, Upright Citizens Brigade, and the Danny Kaye Playhouse. Zack has also trained with prominent NYC casting directors including Paul Schnee (Barden/Schnee Casting), Alaine Alldaffer (Playwrights Horizons), Marci Phillips (ABC), and Katja Blichfeld (NBC).
Early in his film career, frustrated by unfinished projects, Zack took initiative by teaching himself filmmaking with the help of friends. In 2007, he launched his web series Zack and Michael, which he created, starred in, wrote, directed, and produced. This 13-episode series follows two aspiring actors, Zack and Michael, as they attempt to break into the industry through a reality show documenting their antics. The pilot, a Star Wars fan film parody, screened at the Pilot Lite and Big Apple Con Film Festivals in 2008, and the series has since amassed tens of thousands of views on YouTube.
Zack also directed, produced, and starred in a short documentary tribute to The Dark Knight featuring fan interviews on Halloween 2008 in New York City. He co-starred and wrote for the comedic web series Losers, directed the viral video Kyle Sands: Raptor Hunter, and appeared in upcoming feature films The Bastard Men of Root Flats, a steampunk western, and the dark comedy The Mel Klein Diaries. He produced and starred in the short film Jealous Jerzy for Jack Gattanella, continuing their collaboration with the co-production Lines of Glory, which has been showcased at festivals domestically and internationally. More recently, he produced the new comedy sci-fi television pilot LOSERS to pitch to networks and is involved in Nightwing: Escalation, a fan-made web series based on the DC Comics character, currently in production on its third and final season.
Beyond producing LOSERS (2015), Zack acted in the TV/web series Flicks, executive produced by LOSERS cinematographer Bobby Sansivero. The show, originally greenlit by FX Networks, centers on four filmmakers striving to succeed in the industry. Zack plays a wild porn director who hires the Flicks crew on the spot, delivering one of his funniest on-camera performances to date.
In 2015, Zack completed work on Wild Men, a found footage comedy about a reality show searching for definitive proof of Bigfoot. He stars as Dick Heffelfinger, the show's captain, and regards it as his best project yet. The film is currently pursuing distribution through the festival circuit.
