Biography
Before launching her music career, Cheryl Pepsii Riley led a typical 9-to-5 life as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), working with handicapped children. She earned her nursing license from Clara Barton High School. While working, Cheryl was part of a local group called Stargaze and spent weekends singing at nightclubs and performing in community theater to share her talent. Eventually, she connected with Full Force, a fellow Brooklyn-based group. Bowlegged Lou from Full Force offered her the song "I Wonder If I Take You Home," but Cheryl declined. The song was then given to Lisa Lisa and became a huge hit. When Lou called her to share the song’s success on the radio, he said, "This could have been you!" Cheryl felt like she had missed her chance. Later, Lou returned with another opportunity, helping her secure her first record deal with Sony Records. Lou was inspired to write "Thanks For My Child" after his ex-wife suffered a miscarriage—a fact not publicly shared at the time. Cheryl recorded the song, which went to number one. Throughout this time, she continued working with handicapped children. Thanks to the music industry's environment, Lou and Gary Reeves helped Cheryl land her first stage role in the play "Momma Don't," with Lou negotiating her initial contract alongside director Michael Matthews. From there, Cheryl took flight on her own. She has since appeared in numerous plays, including Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Class Reunion, Madea Goes To Jail, Why Did I Get Married, The Marriage Counselor, Madea’s Big Happy Family, and Laugh To Keep From Crying. This humble and spiritual woman keeps honing her craft and sharing her gifts with a powerful message that resonates deeply.
