Biography
Samuel Hopkins Adams, a journalist, author, biographer, and historian, was born on January 26, 1871, in Dunkirk, NY, along the shores of Lake Erie. His parents were Myron Adams, a minister, and Hester Rose Hopkins Adams, daughter of a theologian. He attended Hamilton College in Clinton, NY, and after graduating, began his career as a newspaper reporter and later became an editor.
In the early 1900s, Adams emerged as a pioneer of "muckraking journalism" with his investigative reports on the patent medicine industry, published in Collier's Magazine. He went on to write numerous articles on health and medicine, becoming an associate member of the American Medical Association despite lacking formal medical training. He is considered one of the first journalists to present health topics in a way accessible to the general public.
Adams published his debut novel, "The Clarion," in 1914, which depicted an idealistic editor struggling to maintain journalistic integrity amid corrupt advertisers and politicians. Throughout his novels, a recurring theme was the victory of idealism over corruption. He authored biographies of writer Alexander Woollcott, politician Daniel Webster, and President Warren G. Harding. Supporters of Harding once attempted to suppress Adams' 1926 novel "Revelry" due to its depiction of scandals during Harding's administration. Adams also created the "Detective Average Jones" mystery stories, which were later adapted for radio. Under the pseudonym Warner Fabian, he wrote several novels exploring the "Lost Generation" post-World War I, with "Flaming Youth" (1923) being among the most notable.
An authority on New York state's history, Adams contributed a series of articles on the Erie Canal to "The New Yorker," which were compiled and published in 1955 as "Godfather Stories." He also wrote "Canal Town" (1944), detailing the canal's construction; "Banner by the Wayside," about a 19th-century New York traveling acting troupe; and "Sunrise to Sunset," chronicling the rise of the labor union movement in New York's garment district.
In 1898, Adams married Elizabeth R. Noyes (1877–1957) from Charleston, WV. They had two daughters before divorcing in 1915. Later that year, he wed former stage actress Jane Peyton Van Norman (1880–1946).
Adams passed away on November 15, 1958, at his winter home in Beaufort, SC, and was survived by his daughters, Hester and Katherine.
