Synopsis

For 275 years, Handel’s Messiah has echoed through concert halls and cathedrals across the nation, a timeless choral masterpiece that stirs the soul. Born from an 18th-century Easter fundraiser at London’s Foundling Hospital, its soaring melodies and profound message have become woven into the fabric of British culture.

Now, Gareth Malone—whose own love affair with Messiah began in childhood—steps onto the conductor’s podium for the very first time. Handpicking eight passionate singers from hundreds of hopefuls, he embarks on an intense seven-week journey of rigorous rehearsals, pushing each voice to its limits. Amid personal trials—breast cancer, grief, and doubt—these novices bond, their spirits forging a collective strength destined to culminate in a breathtaking performance alongside the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales at Cardiff’s majestic Llandaff Cathedral.

Interlaced with stirring rehearsals, Gareth delves deep into Messiah’s rich history and profound spiritual roots, visiting the Halifax Choral Society—guardians of a 206-year tradition—and exploring Handel’s London home with expert Dr. Hannah French. Moments with Cardiff’s Father Jarel Robinson-Brown reveal the enduring power behind the work’s depiction of Christ’s life.
