Synopsis

In a world where the shadows of history often remain hidden, a forgotten chapter of Italian cinema is brought to light. Official records deny their existence, but anti-Semitic films, documentaries, and newsreels from the Istituto Luce once served as a tool of prejudice, echoing fascist ideologies. Unlike the overt propaganda of Goebbels, these works operated in the shadows, unofficial yet undeniably potent. With painstaking research, author and researcher Luca Martera uncovers this clandestine cinematic past, revealing films that perpetuated stereotypes and biases from Italy's silent era to the spoken word.

Guided by narrator Carla Oppo, "Ugly, Dirty, and Hook-Nosed. Anti-Semitic Italian Cinema (1910-1943)" delves into a forgotten narrative, airing on Rai Storia. This documentary journeys from the silent films that subtly embedded anti-Jewish prejudices to the sound films that Mussolini wielded as propaganda. It explores how influential figures, from directors to journalists, crafted these works before and after the racial laws of 1938. With insights from Holocaust historian Amedeo Osti Guerrazzi and film experts Steve Della Casa and Maria Assunta Pimpinelli, the documentary challenges our understanding of cinema’s role in fascism and the enduring impact of these hidden films.
