Love Among the Ruins Trivia

Trivia

In 1973, while interviewing Katharine Hepburn on The Dick Cavett Show (1968), Cavett asked whether she regretted never acting with Sir Laurence Olivier. Hepburn smiled, laughed, and answered, "Well, neither of us is dead yet. Even though you may think so." Two years later, Hepburn and Olivier made this movie together.
Off-screen, Sir Laurence Olivier and Katharine Hepburn had been friends throughout their lives.
When this television movie first aired in 1975, it was the most expensive two-hour movie ever made for television.
Katharine Hepburn and Laurence Olivier were born in 1907 just ten days apart: Hepburn on May 12 and Olivier on May 22.
This was the ninth of the ten movies Katharine Hepburn made with director George Cukor, and their first collaboration since Pat and Mike (1952).
This was the only movie made together by Sir Laurence Olivier and Katharine Hepburn.
The title comes from Robert Browning's 1855 poem.
Katharine Hepburn had worked with director George Cukor eight times before, but this was the only time Cukor and Laurence Olivier made a film together.
It was originally planned as a vehicle for legendary Broadway husband-and-wife performers Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne.
On August 31, 1940, Katharine Hepburn and Garson Kanin drove Sir Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh to their wedding at Ronald Colman's ranch.
This was veteran Hollywood director George Cukor's first television movie.
Katharine Hepburn suggested teaming herself with Sir Laurence Olivier as the stars.
The movie received seven Emmy Award nominations and won six: for Hepburn, Oiivier, Cukor, writing (James Costigan), costume design (Margaret Furse), and art direction (Carmen Dillon and Tessa Davies). It lost the Emmy for Outstanding Special to "The Law," directed by John Badham and starring Judd Hirsch and John Beck.
In his final speech in the Court, Olivier quotes William Shakespeare's Sonnet 104.
George Cukor directed two television movies, and this was the first. The second was The Corn Is Green (1979), which also starred Katharine Hepburn and was the last of Cukor and Hepburn's ten collaborations.
Although it was first made for U.S. television, which showed it in a standard 1.33:1 aspect ratio, the movie was filmed with extra picture information at the top and bottom of the screen, suggesting the filmmakers were considering theatrical distribution in the U.K. Its correct aspect ratio is therefore 1.85:1, which widescreen televisions can display using the Zoom 1 feature.
