As Time Goes By Trivia

Trivia

The man and woman shown in the opening photographs as Jean (DameJudi Dench) and Lionel (Geoffrey Palmer) when they first met are actually Dench's daughter, Finty Williams, and Palmer's son.
Moira Brooker (Judith) admits that while taping, she would sometimes become so captivated by Dame Judi Dench's talents that she forgot her lines.
Lionel's frequently mentioned memoir was titled "My Life in Kenya". Jenny Funnell (Sandy) was born in Kenya.
The program was first called "Winter with Flowers", but when a cake with that title was brought to the taping of the first episode, the cast and crew refused to eat any until the series was renamed.
Dame Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer appeared together in Tomorrow Never Dies (1997).
Jean's role was originally written for Jean Simmons.
The series takes its name from songwriter Herman Hupfeld's (1894-1951) song "As Time Goes By" (1931). Singer Joe Fagin's rendition was used as the series' theme song.
Although she played his stepmother, Joan Sims (Madge) was almost three years younger than Geoffrey Palmer (Lionel). Sims was born on 9 May 1930 and Palmer on 4 June 1927, and he outlived her by 19 years.
Judi Dench often worked alongside her close friend Geoffrey Palmer, starring with him in As Time Goes By; they also appeared in popular films including Mrs. Brown (1997) and Tomorrow Never Dies (1997).
Jean's role was initially written for Jean Simmons, but she declined because she was reluctant to uproot her life. She specifically mentioned her dogs, garden, and family-in California.
Justine Francine Glenton played Lionel's secretary Daisy in one episode of Season 3, while Zoe Hilson played her in four episodes of Season 4.
David Michaels played Sandy's eventual husband, Harry, from season 6 to season 9; Daniel Ryan took over the role for the 2005 Reunion Special.
David Oyelowo, who played Patrick in the 2005 Reunion Special, is also known as 'David O'. A classically trained stage actor, he has quickly become one of Hollywood's most sought-after talents. He graduated from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and received the "Scholarship for Excellence" from Nicholas Hytner in 1998.
Neither Sandy's (Jenny Funnell) surname nor Mrs. Bale's (Janet Henfrey) first name is disclosed at any point in the series.
Geoffrey Palmer (Lionel) and Dame Judi Dench (Jean) are the only actors in all 67 episodes, including the 2 part series finale. All other cast members, including those playing supporting characters, appear in the finale only in flashbacks.
Frank Middlemass and Geoffrey Palmer portray father and son, although they are only eight years apart in age.
Paul Chapman and Tim Wylton, both regulars in A Bit of a Do, also have semi-regular roles in this show. Chapman plays a dentist in both shows.
Though their characters are supposed to be about the same age, Moyra Fraser (Penny) was some 16 years older than Paul Chapman, who played her husband Stephen.
