The Truth about M40 - Deep Sky Videos

Messier 40 is a pair of stars rather than the 'fuzzy' nebula otherwise found in Messier's catalog. They were long presumed to be a binary system until a study of their proper motion suggested they are unrelated. But that was not definite until Professor Merrifield looked at the Gaia parallax data for this program and found they are hundreds of light year's apart.

Messier 90 is a spiral galaxy passing through and possibly merging with the Virgo cluster. It is colliding with the hot intergalactic gas in the cluster resulting in the galaxy's outlying gas in the spiral arms being stripped off and heated up while gas at the galaxy's center is compressed leading to a burst of star formation.

M28 - Millisecond Pulsar - Deep Sky Videos

Messier 28 contains a dozen or so millisecond pulsars surprising astronomers because they should have spun down during the billions of years since this globular cluster formed. Current thinking is the cores of globular clusters are so compact that high mass pulsars are accreting gas from smaller nearby stars causing the pulsar to spin faster.
