Joey Sylvester, born Joseph John Sylvester in Chicago, Illinois, studied film and theatre at Columbia College Chicago. His first acting role was as the Chief Weasel in Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows on stage. Always carrying his video camera, Joey gathered his friends to film scene after scene, sparking his creativity and uncovering his talents in directing, producing, and acting.
While at Columbia College, he landed a small role opposite James Spader in the Keanu Reeves thriller The Watcher (2000). After moving to Los Angeles, California, Joey immersed himself in the indie film scene, sharing the screen with Mark Addy, Danny Trejo, and Oz Perkins.
Joey made his directorial debut with In the Land of Opportunity (2009), which premiered at FESPACO in Burkina Faso and was featured on the BBC. The film was honored at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago, where it was praised as "an impressive and well-crafted film."
He served as Second Unit Director on Dr. Dolittle: Million Dollar Mutts (2009) by 20th Century Fox, starring Kyla Pratt and Judge Reinhold. This experience led to his first feature film directing role with Walk A Mile In My Pradas (2011), featuring Tom Arnold, Mike Starr, and Dee Wallace.
Between projects, Joey directs various internet commercials for brands like Calvin Klein, Pepsi, and Bounce Fabric Softener. His passion for music also opened doors to direct music videos for four-time Grammy winner James Fauntleroy, Talib Kweli, GoonRock, Lil Durk, and Ehab Tawfnik.
Joey's latest feature film, Amanda and the Fox (2018), stars Jason London, Richard Karn, and Elizabeth Foster.
