While attending Cambridge University, Montgomery was part of Footlights, an amateur theatrical group. She later studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama. She developed her career as one-third of the Comedy Theatre Company Population 3, alongside James Bachman and Barunka O'Shaughnessy, and appeared as a roving reporter on the comedy TV show The Friday Night Project (2005). Her other television credits include Bo'Selecta!, The Mighty Boosh (2003), and The IT Crowd (2006).
Montgomery has featured in numerous BBC Radio 4 programs, such as the radio phone-in parody Down the Line, Robin and Wendy's Wet Weekends, The Way We Live Right Now, The Museum of Everything, The Department, Another Case of Milton Jones, The Party Line, Harry Hill's Ghost of a Christmas Present, The Pits, the Torchwood episode "Lost Souls," and Lucy Montgomery's Variety Pack (2010). Starting in 2005, she wrote for and performed in the BBC Three comedy sketch show Tittybangbang (2005), which also starred Debbie Chazen and ran for three series until late 2007. She appeared in [link-tt1130073] on BBC One and Bellamy's People (2010) on BBC Two. Additionally, she featured in The Law of the Playground (2006) and The Wall (2008) on BBC Three, and created a pilot for her own BBC sketch show, The Full Montgomery, which was not picked up. She voiced the character Destiny in Mongrels (2010) and contributed voice work to the Comedy Central series Badly Dubbed Porn (2005). Montgomery also starred as Suzi in the Jennifer Saunders-written musical Viva Forever!, inspired by the music of the Spice Girls.
