Travis Bain is a filmmaker based in Cairns, Queensland. He developed a passion for cinema early on after watching his first film, Star Wars, at the age of four. The VHS surge of the early 1980s deepened his fascination with a wide range of films, from Kubrick and Lean to exploitation genres. In 1998, Travis studied film and television production in Brisbane, earning awards for his short films and TV commercials. Inspired by Robert Rodriguez's low-budget breakthrough feature El Mariachi, Travis wrote, produced, and directed his self-funded debut feature, Scratched, in 2002. Scratched was screened in Brisbane in 2005 as one of four finalists in the inaugural Australia/New Zealand digiSPAA Digital Feature Initiative and also featured at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival. Following Scratched, Travis wrote, produced, and directed his second feature, Throwback, which was selected for numerous international film festivals and won several awards. Released on DVD, Blu-ray, and VOD worldwide in 2015, Throwback established Travis as a filmmaker to watch among critics. In 2017, his third feature, the crime thriller Landfall, premiered on the festival circuit to widespread acclaim, with screenings in Cairns, Melbourne, and the Gold Coast. Renowned for his skill in low-budget filmmaking that appears more costly than it is, Travis received the Tony Bonner Award for Best Emerging New Talent at the 2017 Australian Screen Industry Network Awards. In 2018, he won Best Director for Landfall at both the Australian Screen Industry Network Awards and the Oz International Film Festival on the same evening, with Landfall also taking home Best Feature Film at the Oz International Film Festival.
