Chicago-born actress Phyllis Katz is a seasoned character actress with numerous guest roles on TV series like Rhoda, The White Shadow, The Billy Crystal Show, CBS's short-lived Charlie and Co. starring Flip Wilson, Webster, and E/R. She also appeared several times on M*A*S*H, portraying various nurse roles, including Nurse Able. As a founding member and former director of The Groundlings improv group, Phyllis has built a diverse career in television, film, and theater as an actor, writer, and director. Her one-woman show, "Katz: Music & Characters," earned a Drama-Logue award for best performance; her play "Codependently Yours" was nominated for an L.A. Weekly award; and her debut short film, "Shoedini," maintained a perfect 10 rating on I-film for a year. Recently, she appeared in Reno 911, Strong Medicine, and the film Taking the Plunge, and starred as the female lead on Showtime's cult comedy Sherman Oaks. As a songwriter, she co-wrote three TV theme songs and the anthem for Project Literacy, and was a regular contributor to FX's Son of the Beach. Beyond co-creating The Groundlings School, Phyllis offers private coaching and leads workshops in writing, character development, and song improv nationwide. She also contributes to OurLa.org. For several years, Phyllis has worked as an actor, teacher, and director with The Virginia Avenue Project, a Santa Monica community arts initiative supporting at-risk youth. She is sister to writer/producer Allan Katz and Stu Katz, an attorney and jazz musician whose 2013 CD Family Affair * Ira Sullivan and Stu Katz - Live at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase was released by Origin Records. Phyllis is married to photographer Rob Lewine, who also plays bass and writes songs for The Enzymes. They reside in Los Angeles with their dogs, Gary and Brian.
